Volunteer Title Board Member This is a volunteer position requiring 1-5 hours per month. Organization Founded in 1980, the Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago, (NPN), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to connect a diverse community of families with the support and resources designed to solve the challenges of parenting in Chicago. NPN helps parents research schools, navigate developmental differences, and get parent-to-parent advice. Learn more at npnparents.org. Board Member Purpose Come join a supportive, hard-working team of parents dedicated to bringing resources to their fellow parents in Chicago. Board Members guide NPN in its mission and goals by actively engaging in board meetings with the Executive Director, building relationships within the Chicago business, educational, and parent community, and participating in NPN’s events, programs, fundraisiers, and membership campaigns. Desired Qualifications Not all applicants will have skills that match this description exactly. NPN values diverse experiences and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to apply. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table! Comfortable introducing themselves to business owners, non-profit professionals, school leaders, and parents in order to build relationships and request donations of time and money to support NPN’s mission Able and willing to help with board administrative and leadership tasks each month (1-5 hour time commitment each month) Familiar with and actively engaged in at least one Chicago neighborhood Familiar with the needs of parents of children with developmental differences Bilingual (Spanish/English) Internally motivated to build relationships with and celebrate all types of Chicago families including but not limited to families with one parent, families of children with developmental differences, new parents, experienced parents, LGBTQIA+ parents and children, and families across all income brackets, races, and religions. Duties and Responsibilities Attend at least one virtual or in-person NPN event each month Contribute to the annual fundraising campaign in the amount of $400 annually Secure a minimum of 5 auction items with a minimum value of $50 each annually Follow NPN on social media and share posts regularly Participate in NPN’s online discussion forum regularly Recruit new NPN members (suggested 5+ each year) Required Qualifications Strong interpersonal skills. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Ability to devote 2-5 hours of work to NPN each month. Ability to attend all board meetings. In this introductory workshop, you will learn ten pillars that can help you develop healthier family relationships and bring more peace, calm, and joy to your home. This session is useful for parents with children of any age, from 0 to adulthood. Reena Vohra Morgan is a mother to three children and has over twenty years of experience in education. She holds a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Development, Montessori certificates, and is a Jai Certified Parenting Coach. In combination with theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and compassion, Reena uses a strengths-based, reflective approach to coach and empower educators and parents. She offers concrete strategies, tools, and manageable action plans to support adults who interact directly with children. Job Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate monthly NPN play dates. This includes securing venues and sponsors, posting events to the calendar, managing the RSVP list, and prepping staff to manage the event. Coordinate and execute live and recorded webinars and in-person sessions with expert speakers and panelists to educate parents on school search and developmental differences from birth through 18 years, and occasionally current events/topics. This includes speaking on camera, managing the technical aspect of the videos, editing videos as necessary, and uploading them to the website. This includes helping to identify topics, identifying potential speakers, and working with speakers to prepare. Build relationships with family-focused businesses and organizations in South Loop, Chinatown, Bronzeville, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Humboldt Park, Little Village, and Pilsen to increase member benefits and NPN’s reach. This will require traveling to and within those neighborhoods. Attend and contribute to staff meetings and help in other capacities as needed Required Qualifications Strong writing skills and interpersonal skills. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Ability to work special events on evenings and weekends approximately 6 times per year. Ability to travel throughout the city of Chicago as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Microsoft Word, Excel Google Workspace Work Environment All NPN staff work from home. We do not have an office. We have an in-person event at least once a month at various venues throughout the city. Work hours are flexible. However, core work hours are 9am - 3pm Monday through Friday. We ask all staff to be available to schedule phone calls and meetings within that time frame. Most meetings and calls are scheduled in advance. All staff occasionally need to work weekend or evening hours. The program manager will be responsible for the weekend NPN playdates and other evening and weekend programming. Most often this means working the event. Sometimes it means ensuring that another staff member is confirmed to work and has all of the information needed. NPN team member Amy is coordinating these video chats for moms to connect and talk about sleep, feeding, all of the unique challenges and joys you face as new moms.
